Born in New York in 1959, Michael Korss’ foray into fashion was at the tender age of 19, designing a collection for the New York boutique, Lothars. In 1981, with the confidence of this successful collection under his belt, Kors launched his own label that was first sold in a number of globally known Big Apple stores such as Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
1997 saw Kors take the helm at premium French designer, Celine. The first male to be appointed as creative director at the French fashion house, Kors created a hugely successful ready-to-wear line for Celine as well as a critically acclaimed accessories range, firmly placing the designer’s star on the fashion map. In 2001, the Michael Kors Sunglasses collection was launched and immediately embraced by his celebrity fans, as well as acquiring a new clan of Tinseltown recruits.
Expanding his fashion house empire even further, Kors launched his debut menswear collection, ‘Michael Kors Men’ in 2002. Adding simplistic, sartorial style to men’s fashion, the new line added another successful section to the Michael Kors portfolio.
Among the celebrities who have shown their appreciation for Michael Kors' subtly glamorous and chic designs are Jennifer Lopez; who wore a heavily embellished, cut out gown to the premier of ‘Shall We Dance’, Oscar winning actress, Natalie Portman; who opted for Kors’ understated halter neck maxi at the 2011 DGA Awards and in 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama chose a classic shift dress from Kors’ collection to wear, for her first official government portrait. And it’s not just the red carpet that Kors’ designs are chosen for; he outfitted Rene Russo's character in the 1999 hit remake of the cult film, The Thomas Crown Affair. On the more casual end of Michael Kors’ designs, the ad campaigns often reflect the jet-set sportswear that Kors fans are fond of. Previous campaigns include the model Carmen Kass on the tarmac of an airport, on a safari in Africa, and relaxing on a yacht.
Today, Michael Kors is the leading American fashion designer for luxury accessories and sportswear. The company’s heritage is rooted in the creation of sleek, sophisticate American sportswear with a jet-set attitude.
