Jarvis Cocker

Who would have thought that a lanky guy with a name like Jarvis would become a rock star/style icon back in the 90s and fast forwarding to now, still is.

As front man of 90s Britpop group Pulp, Jarvis Cocker was a visually challenged force to be reckoned with as his unique British sound became a phenomenon. Not only did his music inspire, but so did his unique and quirky style with a main style staple being his specs. He dressed his skinny frame with double breasted jackets and random T-shirts which defined the look of Britpop, but it was his oversized thick acetate glasses that really distinguished Cocker. Jarvis may have drawn inspiration from Michael Caine's 1960s character 'Harry Palmer' in the iconic spy films. After all, he was the first action hero to wear glasses and Cocker was the first rocker to do the same.

Mr Cocker proved to be the man of the moment in 1996, when he controversially upstaged Michael Jackson at the Brit Awards. The late Jackson was performing 'The Earth Song' when funny man Cocker moonied the camera and ran around the stage with a bunch of butch security men in hot pursuit. Not just a singer but a bit of a comedian to boot.

His style in the 90s was a style that challenged the main trend contender; American grunge, which had a global following that was arguably due to Nivarna singer and teen-angst heart-throb, Kurt Cobain. Unintentionally becoming a style icon, Pulp’s music wasn’t the only thing that was speaking volumes, and without intention he was becoming a fashion inspiration to hoards of teens across Europe. Jarvis wore his glasses with a low key arrogance and today it seems his look has had a rebirth in the form of the 'Geek Chic' phenomenon.
