Andreas Thorkildsen makes serious international events look like mere formalities at times. The Norwegian superstar has won just about every honour on offer, including two Olympic gold medals.
In fact, his Olympic gold medal performance back in 2008 is considered the stuff of legend. Going into the fifth round, a previously in consistent Thorkildsen peaked at the right time. Under the obvious pressure, Thorkildsen managed the first 90 metre throw of the season. In fact, it travelled 90.57 metres, smashing the Olympic record set by Czech star Jan Zelezny.
Fast forward a year, and the World Championships in Berlin set the scene for another milestone. Thorkildsen cleared 89.59 metres, and in doing so became the first javelin thrower to hold European, World and Olympic titles at the same time. Thorkildsen was also crowned Norwegian Athlete of The Year every year from 2004 to 2009.
