Born in 1961, Tom Ford grew up in Austin, Texas and later with his realtor parents moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. In his teens, Ford relocated again to New York City to study art history at New York City University. After just a year, Ford dropped out of his history of art degree to pursuit a career in acting and was a successful model in many TV commercials and advertising campaigns. Whilst acting he continued to study but this time in interior architecture at The New School's famous Art and Design College. Hitting the social scene of NYC, Ford became a regular at legendary nightclub Studio 54, along with the like of other designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg and this disco era can be seen as a major influence on the designer’s collections. Especially the Tom Ford SS11 collection.

Whilst studying, Ford took a sabbatical, spending a year and a half in Paris working for fashion house Chloe. Ford discovered his love for fashion during his stint as a press assistant for the fashion house’s PR sector. Once graduated, Ford forged his path in fashion and called American designer, Cathy Hardwick every day for a month until he was given a job at her mid end fashion leisure company. Hardwick later recalled the interview and why she gave this young designer a chance. "I had every intention of giving him no hope. I asked him who his favourite European designers were. He said, ' Armani and Chanel.' Months later I asked him why he said that, and he said, 'Because you were wearing something Armani'. Is it any wonder he got the job?" Ford worked as a design assistant for Hardwick for two years.

1988 saw Tom Ford move to Perry Ellis, working with Marc Jacobs where he stayed as an assistant designer for another two years. Wanting to spread his wings and influence his design with European culture, Ford took the opportunity to work for the then, faltering leather good company, Gucci. A big risk for both parties, Gucci was taking a chance on a near unknown designer and Ford was relocating his life to Milan to begin his post as the Gucci women's ready-to-wear designer. Within 6 months the risk that Gucci took was verified with Ford’s role expanding to designing Gucci's footwear and menswear collection. Ford was hailed as being responsible for putting the glamour back into Gucci.

In 2005 the brand Tom Ford was created and in the same year the Tom Ford Eyewear division was introduced. Since then the American designer’s range of Tom Ford sunglasses has gained an elite celebrity following that includes Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston and Olivia Palermo.
